  • How to Achieve A Perfect Cutting on Metal Tube with Fiber Laser?

    Laser power

    • The laser power of lasers with continuous-wave output has a significant impact on the pipe metal laser cutter CNC. Theoretically, the higher the laser power of the tube laser cutting machine is, the higher the cutting speed is, but maximum cutting power is not the best choice when the characteristics of the pipe itself are taken into consideration. When the cutting power is increased, the laser mode will change, which affects the focus of the laser beam. In actual processing, power lower than the maximum allows the focus to gain the highest power density to ensure cutting efficiency and quality in the whole processing.

    Cutting speed

    • Cutting speed must be controlled in a certain range during processing to obtain good cutting quality. If cutting speed is slow, too much heat will accumulate on the pipe surface, resulting in a larger heat-affected zone, wider cutting joint, and rough cutting incision due to the burning effect of hot molten substance discharged. When the cutting speed is accelerated, the average circumferential cutting joint of the tube becomes narrower, and the smaller the diameter of the tube cut is, the more obvious this effect is. With the acceleration of cutting speed, the time of laser emission is shortened, the total energy absorbed by the pipe becomes is less, the temperature of the front end of the pipe decreases, and the cutting joint narrows. Too fast speed maybe leads to failure of cutting-through or cutting-off, thus affecting the overall cutting quality.

    Pipe diameter

    • The characteristics of the pipe itself have a great impact on the cutting process. For example, the diameter size of the round pipe has a significant influence on processing quality. Researches on laser cutting of seamless thin metal pipe show that widening pipe diameter leads to widening cutting joint under fixed parameters.

    Types and pressure of auxiliary gases

    • Compressed air or inert gases (eg. nitrogen) can be used as auxiliary gases when cutting non-metallic and part of metallic tubes, while reactive gases (eg. oxygen) can be used for most metallic tubes. After the choice of auxiliary gases, it is also important to determine the pressure of the auxiliary gas. When cutting thin tubes at high speed, the pressure of the auxiliary gas should be increased to prevent slag around the incision. In contrast, when cutting thick tubes or cutting at low speed, the pressure of the auxiliary gas should be appropriately reduced to prevent the tube from not being cut through or cut off.

    • The beam focus position is also very important during cutting. The focus is usually on the surface of the pipe cut. The focus in a good position can gain the smallest cutting joint, the highest efficiency, and the best cutting results.
